The HIPAA Security Rule requires that covered entities implement policies and procedures to address the final disposition of electronic PHI and/or the hardware or electronic media on which it is stored, as well as to implement procedures for removal of electronic PHI from electronic media before the media are made available for re-use. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a Federal law that protects the confidentiality of student information. Securis recognizes the absolute need for proper domestic recycling services. Securis recycles 100% of all materials that are received at its facility in the US. Securis does not export hazardous materials to developing countries as defined by the BAN. By complying with BAN, Securis exceeds U.S. federal mandates and instead is compliant with the widely adopted international standard.

All downstream processors receiving shredded material from Securis must complete an Agreement for Responsible Disposal of Sensitive Materials. At this time, all magnetic media is incinerated using the cleanest methods available. Smelting documentation can be provided upon request. All metal-based material is sent to a domestic-based refinery, and refined according to metal type.
