How Securis’ Triple Check Guarantee Prevented a Data Breach for a Financial Services Company

The Challenge

A financial services company hired Securis for on-site data destruction during an equipment refresh and decommissioning. The client stated that all data drives had already been removed and that eight server cabinets and servers were ready to be recycled.

In the financial services industry, the stakes are high. If data-bearing devices leave the environment intact, the result can be breach notifications, regulatory exposure, and reputational damage. Even strong internal teams can miss drives due to complex chassis designs, legacy configurations, and prior upgrades.

The Solution

As part of standard handling, Securis inspected the eight server cabinets and discovered 86 missed data-bearing devices:

  • 72 SSDs
  • 14 HDDs

These 86 drives represented 15% of the total drives that were missed during the client’s internal removal process, meaning the exposure was not minor. It was systemic.

The Triple Check Guarantee in Action

Securis uses a three-check, layered verification process designed to prevent missed data-bearing devices from slipping into downstream recycling or redeployment.

Check 1: Job Site Verification

The customer confirmed that drives were removed. Securis documented this as a starting point, but does not rely on it as the final control.

Check 2: Service Team Physical Inspection and Destruction

Securis technicians conducted a hands-on inspection and identified the 86 drives still present in the cabinets.

Those devices were then:

  • Scanned and photographed using DriveSnap AI (capturing device label data and documentation), and
  • Shredded or disintegrated as part of the destruction process.

This is the point where the breach risk is eliminated.

Check 3: IT/Wiping Area Validation Using Blancco

After physical destruction actions are taken, Securis performs a power-on validation step using Blancco Drive Eraser to detect whether any data-bearing devices remain in the system environment.

If Blancco detects a missed drive, processing stops and the issue is escalated so it can be addressed with the customer and corrected before anything moves forward.

This step exists specifically because missed drives can happen, and Securis builds process discipline to catch them.

The Results

Securis destroyed all 86 missed drives, ensuring no intact SSDs or HDDs entered the recycling stream. The remaining equipment could then be recycled with significantly reduced risk.

The Impact

Key outcomes included:

  • Identification of 86 overlooked drives inside equipment slated for recycling
  • On-site destruction that removed the risk of downstream exposure
  • Documentation support through DriveSnap AI scanning and photo capture
  • A final Blancco validation control is designed to catch anything that somehow slips past physical inspection

For a financial services organization, this layered approach is precisely what reduces the odds of a preventable, high-cost incident.

Why This Is a Differentiator

Most providers stop at customer confirmation or a single inspection step.

Securis differentiates by using layered controls that do not depend on one person, one statement, or one checkpoint:

  • Customer verification
  • Physical inspection plus documented destruction (DriveSnap AI + shredding/disintegration)
  • Power-on validation using Blancco to detect remaining data-bearing devices

That is what the Triple Check Guarantee represents: repeatable safeguards that reduce human error and protect regulated organizations.
